Today is the first day of training camp starting with John Tortorella's infamous conditioning tests. It may be obvious but conditioning in the NHL is important with such a long season and you can bet the Rangers are planning on being on the ice for a long time. Per Andrew Gross here is the entire training camp roster.
There are two things you will notice looking at that roster. The first is that there are no veteran invites. There may be different reasons for this but I see it as a good thing. The team and organization believes that they can fill their roster out with homegrown talent which has been a mantra for the last few seasons. I would have liked to have seen a veteran defenseman come in but with Tim Erixon impressing people at the prospects tournament I am not shocked none were invited.
The second thing that you will notice and has been reported over the last day or so is that Wade Redden was not invited to training camp. He has been sent to directly report to the Connecticut Whale of the AHL which I guess is not really a surprise to anyone. The thing to watch is whether or not he will report to that camp. If he does not his contract is void but there has been no reason to think that he will not report to that camp. The obvious thing here is that it seems Redden is destined to sit in Connecticut for the entire season.
The story lines involved with the main training camp are evident and I will be going through the bigger ones throughout the next week or so leading up the Rangers first preseason game on September 21st in Albany against the Devils (school work permitting). For now we will have to see who survives the conditioning tests and who will fall out of favor. I would suggest following the tweets of the beat writers for this information as well as their reports later for much more in depth coverage.
