As for the Rangers, they lost Sean Avery to the Dallas Stars. Was nice having him but there was no way him and Sather were going to co-exist together. Ill get to Jagr in a minute.
The biggest news of the day for the Rangers came when Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman were traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for forwards Dan Fritsche and Nikolai Zherdev. WOW. For anyone who doesn't know who Nikolai Zherdev is, he was the 4th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Draft by Columbus. This past year he had 26 goals and 35 assists for 61 points. Not bad playing for a defensive minded coach like Ken Hitchcock. Dan Fritsche is a grinding player who is good at penalty killing and can skate very well. He had 10 goals and 12 assists for Columbus in 69 games this year. A good third liner but the Rangers are chock full of those.
So what is next for the Rangers? They have about $8 million left in cap space and are still missing one more winger and at least 1 defenseman. Jaromir Jagr right? Well maybe not. Sather was on MSGNY this evening saying the last thing that he had heard was Jagr was "stepping into Edmonton". Things seem to have gone sour there. Lets assume Jagr leaves. What I would do is re-sign Mara (John Dellapina of the Daily News reports Mara would take about $1.5 million or half of his contract last year). Then the Rangers should go real aggressive and sign Markus Naslund and Sergei Fedorov. Yes they are 2 old veterans and I am making this sound like pre-lockout days. But signing them to 1 year deals doesn't hurt since next year Dubinsky and Zherdev will be up for restricted free agency. But having Fedorov with Naslund and or Zherdev is a very appealing prospect and is definitely a solution if Jagr does indeed decide to leave NY for the bright lights of Edmonton. Sather has said that he is not done making moves whether through free agency or trade so the coming days will be interesting.
Will the Rangers get those 3 guys if Jagr leaves? Probably not. But it is definitely something Sather should be looking at if Jags has taken his last curtain call in New York.
